The release of VMWare’s ESXi (now successfully patched, thank you) for free is a landmark in computing. ESXi is a bare metal virtualization package — meaning that it needs no underlying operating system to run. Once it is installed on your server, you can begin loading on virtual machines of any make.

You do have to make your hardware choice with this software in mind however — follow the compatibility guide.
